Dr. William James Harvey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at McGill University. He serves as Director of the McGill Choices in Health, Action, Motivation, Pedagogy, and Skills (CHAMPS) physical activity lab, which operates in partnership with community stakeholders working with people with disabilities. Dr. Harvey holds a B.Ed. in Physical Education, an M.A. in Adapted Physical Activity, and a Ph.D. in Adapted Physical Activity, all from McGill University. He is also an Associate Researcher at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute.
Dr. Harvey’s research examines self-determination and self-regulation in physical activity and leisure contexts for individuals with and without mental health challenges, including persons with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). His work emphasizes the interplay of theory and practice in adapted physical activity, drawing on critical pedagogy, play, movement skill proficiency, and inclusive approaches in physical and health education. He has authored or co-authored publications such as “A scoping review of mixed methods research about physical activity for children with disabilities” (2023) in Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly, “Mixed methods research in adapted physical education” (2020) in the Routledge Handbook of Adapted Physical Education, and “Critical pedagogy and APA: A resonant (and timely) inter-disciplinary blend” (2018) in Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly, along with additional chapters and articles on physical activity for children with ADHD and critical perspectives in the field. Dr. Harvey accepts master’s and doctoral students in relevant programs.
