Xi Zhang is a chemist and the current President of Jilin University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Analytical Chemistry from Jilin University in 1986, followed by a master’s degree in 1989 and a Ph.D. in 1992 in Polymer Chemistry and Physics from the same institution, with part of his doctoral work conducted at the University of Mainz in Germany. He served as a lecturer at Jilin University from 1993 to 1994 and as a professor of Polymer Chemistry and Physics in the College of Chemistry from 1994 to 2003, during which he also directed the Key Laboratory for Supramolecular Structure and Materials at Jilin University from 1997 to 2003. Since 2004, he has been a professor in the Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua University, where he held positions including Chair of the Department of Chemistry from 2008 to 2014 and Dean of the School of Science from 2013 to 2014. In December 2018, he assumed the role of President of Jilin University.
Zhang was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007. His professional appointments have included Vice President of the Chinese Chemical Society from 2010 to 2018, Deputy Director and later Director of its Polymer Science Committee, Vice President of the Pacific Polymer Federation from 2014 to 2015 and President from 2016 to 2017, Director-in-General of the Department of Chemical Sciences at the National Natural Science Foundation of China from 2014 to 2018, and Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2018. He has served on numerous editorial boards and as Senior Editor of Langmuir (2008–2017), Editor-in-Chief of Acta Polymerica Sinica (2016–2023), and Editor-in-Chief of CCS Chemistry (2022–present). Among his honors are the Young Chemist Award of the Chinese Chemical Society in 1997, the National Natural Science Award (second grade) in 2004, election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2008, the AkzoNobel Chemical Science Award in 2010, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Award in 2016, and the First Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award in 2018.
