Xiang Cheng is a Boya Distinguished Professor and Tenured Professor at Peking University in the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, where he serves in the Institute of Information and Communication Technology. He received his Ph.D. degree jointly from Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh in 2009 and joined Peking University in 2010. His research focuses on wireless communications, channel modeling, data analytics, and the integration of communication networks with artificial intelligence, including intelligent communication networks and connected intelligence. He has published more than 300 journal and conference papers, including over 160 in IEEE journals, authored or co-authored 12 books, and holds numerous patents. Cheng has contributed to the development of four Chinese standards and participated in the formulation of ten 3GPP international standards and two Chinese industry standards. He is an IEEE Fellow and has received numerous honors, including the IEEE Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2015, the Xplorer Prize in 2023, the Fifth Science Exploration Award, and multiple best paper awards from IEEE journals and conferences such as the 2016 IEEE JSAC Leonard G. Abraham Prize. He serves as a Subject Editor for IET Communications and as an Associate Editor for several IEEE journals, and he has held leadership roles in international conferences and professional societies.
Cheng has been recognized as a Highly Cited Chinese Researcher since 2020 and has been included in the World’s Top 2% Scientists list by Stanford University. He has led or participated in major research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and has received multiple provincial and ministerial awards for his contributions to science and technology. His work has advanced standards and applications in vehicular communications, 5G/6G systems, and AI-native communication technologies.
