About Xiaoyuan

Xiaoyuan (Shawn) Chen received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Idaho in 1999, following an MS from Nanjing University. After postdoctoral training at Syracuse University and Washington University in St. Louis, he began his faculty career as Assistant Professor in 2002, moved to Stanford University in 2004 where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2008, and joined the National Institutes of Health in 2009 as Senior Investigator and Chief of the Laboratory of Molecular Imaging and Nanomedicine at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. From 2020 until December 2025, he served as Nasrat Muzayyin Chair Professor in Medicine and Technology at the National University of Singapore, with appointments in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (Department of Diagnostic Radiology), College of Design and Engineering (Departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Biomedical Engineering), and Faculty of Science (Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences). He is currently Professor at the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Precision Oncology, Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute, Shandong First Medical University and Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Chen’s research focuses on molecular imaging, nanomedicine, drug and gene delivery, and theranostics, with applications in cancer and other diseases. He has authored or co-authored over 1,000 peer-reviewed papers with an h-index of 219 and nearly 180,000 citations. He founded the journal Theranostics and served as its editor-in-chief, and was founding editor-in-chief of ACS Nano Medicine. He has received numerous honors, including election as AIMBE Fellow (2017), SNMMI Fellow (2020), Member of the European Academy of Sciences (2024), Member of Academia Europaea (2024), and Member of the Singapore National Academy of Science (2024). Additional recognitions include the JBN Trailblazer Award (2023), SNMMI Michael J. Welch Award (2019), ACS Bioconjugate Chemistry Lecturer Award (2016), NIH Director’s Award (2014), NIBIB Mentor Award (2012), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine Researcher of the Year Award (2025), and membership in the Advanced Materials Hall of Fame (2023). He has held leadership roles such as Past President of the Chinese American Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, the Radiopharmaceutical Science Council of SNMMI, and the Chinese American Society of Nanomedicine and Nanobiotechnology.
