Yasuhiro Iba is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Earth and Planetary System Science at Hokkaido University. His research centers on paleontology with interests including paleoclimatology, paleoecology, biogeography, stratigraphy, and the study of cephalopods and marine fossils. Recent contributions include leading research on the earliest octopuses as giant top predators in Cretaceous oceans, published in Science in 2026, as well as discoveries related to the oldest sepioid cephalopod from the Cretaceous using digital fossil-mining techniques, a new amber Lagerstätte from the Lower Cretaceous of Japan, modern silica sinter deposits, and the origin and radiation of squids.
