About Yasuto

Yasuto Tachikawa is a Professor in the Graduate School of Engineering, Division of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering at Kyoto University. He earned a Master of Engineering and a Doctor of Engineering from Kyoto University, following his undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Engineering at the same institution. His academic career at Kyoto University includes positions as Associate Professor and Professor, with earlier roles at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute and the Faculty of Engineering. He previously served as Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering and Faculty of Engineering, and as Vice-President for long-term development and planning. In June 2026, he was selected as the next President of Kyoto University, with his term beginning in October 2026.

Tachikawa’s research focuses on rainfall-runoff analysis, modeling, and prediction; real-time flood forecasting; hydrologic predictions in ungauged basins; river discharge projections under changing climate conditions; and hydrologic frequency analysis. His work encompasses spatiotemporal modeling of hydrological processes, development of real-time flood forecasting systems, uncertainty analysis in hydrologic modeling, and assessment of climate change impacts on water resources. He maintains active involvement in professional organizations including the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, the Japan Society of Hydrology and Water Resources, and the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. Tachikawa has contributed numerous peer-reviewed papers on topics such as distributed rainfall-runoff modeling, parameter regionalization, data assimilation techniques, and future river discharge projections using large ensemble climate datasets.
