About Yong P.

Yong P. Chen serves as Distinguished Professor at Tohoku University, Professor at the Institute for Materials Research (IMR), and Principal Investigator at the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR). He leads the Materials Physics Group and the Y.P. Chen Group, with research interests in quantum materials and quantum devices, quantum transport and quantum photonics, scanning probe microscopy, topological materials and topological physics, and magnetism, spintronics, and superconductivity.

Chen received a BSc in mathematics from Xi'an Jiaotong University and an MSc in mathematics from MIT. He earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University and completed a postdoc in physics and nanotechnology at Rice University. He joined the faculty at Purdue University in 2007, advancing to the Karl Lark-Horovitz Professor of Physics and Astronomy and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and served as the inaugural Director of the Purdue Quantum Science and Engineering Institute. He holds a Villum Investigator position and is Professor of Physics at Aarhus University. At Tohoku University, his appointments include Principal Investigator at AIMR since 2017 and Distinguished Professor in IMR. His honors include election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2024 and Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2016, as well as the NSF CAREER Award and the IBM Faculty Award. Chen has contributed to numerous publications and press releases on topics such as room-temperature ferroelectricity in tellurium nanowires, deep learning for 2D materials identification, twistronics combined with spintronics, and interfacial ferromagnetism in 2D heterostructures. He is involved in establishing initiatives like the Tohoku Quantum Alliance.
