About Yoshiki

Professor Yoshiki Sawa is a faculty member in the Graduate School of Medicine at Osaka University, where he serves as Professor in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery. He earned his MD from Osaka University Medical School in 1980 and his PhD from the same institution in 1987. Following his medical training, he completed a research and clinical fellowship at the Max-Planck Institute in Germany supported by a Humboldt Scholarship. His career at Osaka University includes progressive appointments, culminating in his role as Professor and Chief of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and Director of the Medical Center for Translational Research at Osaka University Hospital. He also served as Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine from 2015 to 2017 and holds the position of Specially Appointed Professor in the Division of Health Sciences, Future Medical Science.

Professor Sawa’s research focuses on cardiovascular surgery, including heart transplantation, artificial organs, gene therapy, and regenerative medicine approaches using iPS cells to develop cell therapies for heart disease. He has led pioneering work on cardiomyocyte sheets derived from iPS cells for myocardial regeneration. His contributions have been recognized with awards including the Japan Biomaterial Association Award, the Scientific Technology Award from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare award, and the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon in 2020. He has held leadership roles such as President of the Japanese Society of Regenerative Medicine and Director of the Japanese Surgical Society, and serves as an advisor to the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application at Kyoto University.
