About Yuanxi

Academician WAN Yuanxi was born in 1939 in Mianzhu City, Sichuan Province. He graduated from Peking University in 1964 and received his Ph.D. degree in 1967. In 1973, he joined the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Hefei, where he devoted himself to the study of the peaceful use of nuclear energy. He formerly served as head of the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and as General Manager of the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) Project. In 2009, he assumed the position of Dean of the School of Nuclear Science and Technology at the University of Science and Technology of China.

WAN Yuanxi led efforts that resulted in the successful construction of the world's first full superconducting experimental tokamak fusion device with a non-circular cross-section. The EAST project received the First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress in 2008 and the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Anhui Province. He was awarded the title of National Advanced Worker in 2000, Outstanding Party Member of Anhui Province in 2006, and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award in 2009 for his contributions to the EAST project. His work has focused on magnetic confinement fusion research and the development of tokamak technology.
