About Yuen Foong

Yuen Foong Khong is the Li Ka Shing Professor of Political Science at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science (International Relations) from Harvard University in 1987 and his B.A. in History, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Claremont McKenna College in 1980. Prior to his current appointment, Khong served as Professor of International Relations and Professorial Fellow at Nuffield College, University of Oxford. He previously held positions as Associate Professor and Assistant Professor in the Department of Government at Harvard University, and as Professor and Director of the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies at Nanyang Technological University.

Khong’s research focuses on international relations theory, U.S. foreign policy, the international politics of the Asia-Pacific region, and cognitive approaches to decision-making. His influential book Analogies at War: Korea, Munich, Dien Bien Phu, and the Vietnam Decisions of 1965 (Princeton University Press, 1992) received the American Political Science Association’s Best Political Psychology Book Award. Other key publications include The United Nations and Human Security: A Critical History (co-authored with Neil MacFarlane, Indiana University Press, 2006) and the edited volume Unilateralism and U.S. Foreign Policy: International Perspectives (co-edited with David Malone, Lynne Rienner, 2003). He has served on editorial boards including International Security, Security Studies, and The Chinese Journal of International Politics, and held roles such as Vice President of the International Studies Association. Khong received the Erik Erikson Award for distinguished early career contribution to political psychology in 1996 and has been a United States Institute of Peace Fellow.
