About Yuli

Professor Yuli Shan is a Professor in Sustainability at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. He joined the University of Birmingham in 2022 and was promoted to Full Professor in Sustainability in August 2025. His interdisciplinary research focuses on climate change and sustainable transitions, with particular emphasis on accounting for carbon emissions, climate change economics, and sustainable development in developing countries and cities. He serves as Director of the UoB–Nanjing University Joint Centre for Research and Education in Climate, Environment & Health, GEES Sustainability Lead, and Steering Research Committee Member and Lead of Finance for Sustainability at the Birmingham Institute for Sustainability and Climate Action.

Professor Shan holds a BSc in Statistics and Actuarial Science from Tianjin University of Finance and Economics (2012), a Master of Social Development and Public Policy from Fudan University (2014), and a PhD in Climate Change and Development from the University of East Anglia (2018). Prior to joining the University of Birmingham, he worked as a Faculty Research Fellow at the University of Groningen. He is a Global Highly Cited Researcher since 2020 and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society since 2024. His contributions include authorship for the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, over 200 publications in high-impact journals with more than 24,000 citations, and co-founding the open emission dataset CEADs.net. He has received numerous awards, including the University of Birmingham Founders' Award in 2023, and serves on editorial boards and committees in his field.
