About Zdenek

Zdenek Lajbner is a researcher in the Physics and Biology Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST). He earned his MSc., RNDr., and Ph.D. degrees in Zoology from Charles University in Prague, completing his studies between 1999 and 2011. Prior to joining OIST, Lajbner was affiliated with the Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetics at the Czech Academy of Sciences. At OIST, his work centers on biology and aquaculture, with a focus on cephalopods including squid. He has contributed to research on cephalopod camouflage, body color adjustment according to substrate, disease management in aquaculture, and the development of scalable, modular aquaculture systems that use light and flow principles to improve survival rates, reduce labor, and enhance animal welfare for sensitive early life stages of aquatic species such as cephalopods, fish, and shrimp. Lajbner often collaborates with Professor Jonathan Miller and other team members in the Physics and Biology Unit on multidisciplinary projects involving model organisms.
