About Zenji

Professor Zenji Hiroi is a faculty member at the Institute for Solid State Physics (ISSP), The University of Tokyo, where he serves as Professor in the Materials Design and Characterization Laboratory, concurrently affiliated with the Quantum Materials Group. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Kyoto University in 1983, his Master’s degree from the Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University in 1987, and his Doctor of Science from Kyoto University in 1989. His early career at Kyoto University included positions as Technical Associate (1989) and Research Associate (1992) at the Institute for Chemical Research, followed by promotion to Associate Professor there in 1995. In 1998, he joined The University of Tokyo as Associate Professor at ISSP and was appointed Professor in 2004. His research centers on the search for new quantum materials, with emphasis on superconductivity, quantum magnetism, pyrochlore oxides, spin-orbit-coupled metals, mixed-anion compounds, and strongly correlated electron systems. Through solid-state chemistry and physics approaches, including high-pressure synthesis and single-crystal growth, he has contributed to discoveries such as superconductivity in certain pyrochlore oxides and investigations into frustrated magnetic systems and multipole orders. Professor Hiroi continues to advance materials exploration aimed at uncovering novel physical phenomena in condensed matter physics.
