About Zhaoliang

Zhaoliang Liao is a Special Professor at the University of Science and Technology of China. He earned a bachelor’s degree in theoretical physics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2006. He received a Ph.D. in physics from the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2012 and a second Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in 2012. His postdoctoral positions included roles at the University of Twente from 2013 to 2016 and Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 2016 to 2018. He joined the University of Science and Technology of China as faculty in 2018, advancing to Special Researcher and then Special Professor.

Professor Liao’s research focuses on the preparation, regulation, and application of low-dimensional quantum functional materials, with emphasis on complex oxide heterostructures. He utilizes advanced epitaxial growth techniques for atomic-scale material design and explores novel quantum states through synchrotron X-ray spectroscopy and scattering methods. His work addresses challenges in next-generation chip development by investigating charge, spin, and orbital quantum order parameters. He has authored more than 60 SCI-indexed papers, including publications in Nature Materials, Nature Communications, PNAS, Nano Letters, and Physical Review Letters. He supervises master’s and doctoral candidates in the discipline of physics.
