Laboratory Technician
Position Summary
Performs a variety of routine and specialized molecular diagnostic laboratory assays as requested by veterinary professionals according to established protocols and procedures. Prepares specimens for molecular testing procedures. Operates automated laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Performs quality control and assurance procedures. Records lab results in specified system. Follows all required privacy, safety, and biohazard procedures and standards.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Quality assurance and quality control: consistent performance of duties; clear and organized procedures; prompt response to changes in protocol; clear, precise, and complete record keeping. Experience in a microbiology, medical technology, veterinary diagnostic, commercial, or public health laboratory.
- Computer knowledge and skills: Use of Excel, Word, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Organizational skills: Time management, labelling
- Personnel skills: interaction with others of varying beliefs and cultures, effective communication regarding matters of the workplace
- Technical laboratory knowledge and skills: pipetting, autoclaving, handling of bacterial cultures, biosafety, chemical handling safety, aseptic technique, knowledge of molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction, and the running/interpretation of gels
Duties/Responsibilities
Perform Molecular Diagnostic test procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases of animals – Specimen preparation, nucleic acid extraction, quality assessment, perform PCR, prepare and complete all paper documentation, and cross-train in adjacent diagnostic areas to ensure continuous laboratory coverage and service excellence. (85%)
Interpret and report Results: Review PCR results and controls to verify/validate interpretations; Enter all results in laboratory database and send results to clients. (5%)
Quality Control: Prepare and validate new lots and batches of the PCR controls; Document and maintain accurate records. (5%)
General Lab maintenance: Autoclave biohazard waste, wash glassware, restock supplies, equipment maintenance and other duties as assigned. (5%)
